Want to be a MENTOR? Want to be a MENTEE?

Program Overview

WISER (Women in Science Engineering and Research) and UA-WiSE (University of Alberta – Women in Science and Engineering) are launching a new mentorship program that will support men and women in various stages of their STEM careers. The structure will be trios consisting of one undergraduate student, one graduate student or early-career professional, and one experienced professional. This benefits graduate student or early-career professional to gain some experience mentoring an undergraduate student under the supervision of an experienced mentor. We are currently looking for mentors from academia, industry and government.

The program starts in September and continues until April. There will be three fun events throughout the year. At the September 25th launch event, the trios will be introduced. A professional development event will be held on January 28th. At the closing event in April, certificates will be handed out for the successful completion of the mentorship program. All events will be held in the evening. After each event, there will be a short online survey that will take no more than 5 minutes to complete.

Each mentorship trio will meet every two months for at least 2 hours. Meetings can be face to face or via Skype. Trio matching will be done by WISER and UA-WiSE based on future goals and areas of expertise. It focuses on developing different professional skills such as professional conduct, negotiation skills, work-life balance, and more.

Program Benefits for Mentors:

  • Networking with other mentors at the three events of the program
  • Connecting with the new generation of professionals from the University of Alberta
  • Extending your network with early career professionals
  • Improving your communication and leadership skills
  • Giving back to the STEM community
  • Mentorship hours count towards Professional Developments Credit (PDC) for APEGA members (Up to 20)
