More than 41 companies and 150 attendees gathered at the 2021 Annual Virtual Industry Mixer hosted by Women in Science Engineering and Research (WiSER). The event started with an engaging keynote presentation “Diversity and the Alberta Tech Sector – Ready or Not?” from Gail Powley, the president of Technology Alberta and one of the founders of WiSER. Powley encouraged the attendees to think about the role of diversity and its importance in the Alberta Technology Sector.
The second half of the event was a free networking session and a live virtual booth session. Company booths were visited by emerging, diverse talent from the WiSER community of undergraduate, graduate and early career professionals. Attendees learned about the wide variety of career paths in STEM fields and engaged in meaningful conversations with potential future employers. Here are a few quotes from the attendees sharing their thoughts on the industry mixer:
“It was very useful to see the variety of career options available.”
“I liked connecting with companies and having the opportunity to talk to professionals that were excited to share advice and talk about working in the industry.”
“With a future goal to transfer to the industry, this mixer was a valuable platform to connect with SMEs. I even got the chance to interact one-on-one with some of the companies. This mixer gave me a confidence boost and helped me have a better insight into obtaining my goals.”
We not only wanted our attendees to benefit from the networking opportunities but also aimed to ensure that they gained the knowledge and tools to progress in their future careers. Attendees had the opportunity to receive one-on-one feedback and advice about their resumes from the University of Alberta Career Center in another virtual booth.
We are grateful to our sponsors for their generous support in making this event a huge success and making the event freely accessible to participants. Our mission to help women and under-represented groups gain exposure to the STEM industry would not have been possible without the incredible support of our 30+ sponsors this year. We thank our main sponsors, Bioware, Amii, Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation, Inter Pipeline, The Silvacom Group, and Spartan Controls.
With the great success of this event, WiSER will continue to support career advancement and retention of women and under-represented individuals in STEM through networking, interactions with peers and mentors, information exchange, and professional development activities.
