Want to be a MENTOR? Want to be a MENTEE?

Registration is open to All Participants: Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students, Post-Docs, Young Professionals and Experienced Professionals in STEM Fields

Program Overview

WISER (Women in Science Engineering and Research) and UA-WiSE (University of Alberta – Women in Science and Engineering) are launching the second year of their mentorship program that will support men and women in various stages of their STEM careers. The structure will be trios consisting of one undergraduate student, one graduate student or early-career professional, and one experienced professional. This structure benefits the young professional to gain some experience mentoring and undergraduate student under the supervision of an experienced mentor. We are currently looking for mentors from academia, government and industry.

The program will run from September 2016 until April 2017, and will consist of three fun and informative events over the duration of the program:

  • September 29, 2016: Launch Event to introduce the trios with a Guest Speaker
  • February 2, 2017: Professional Panel Discussion where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and dialogue with experienced professionals in academia, industry and government
  • April 27, 2017: Final Event with a professional development workshop (topic based upon participant feedback)

All events will be held in the evening and potential childcare is available. After each event, there will be a short online survey that will take no more than five minutes to complete.

Each mentorship trio are expected to meet every two months for at least two hours (or monthly for one hour). A total minimum commitment of 12 hours over the duration of the program is required to receive certification for the program (this includes time spent at the three events). Meeting can be face to face or via Skype. Trio matching will be done by WISER and UA-WiSE based on future goals and areas of expertise. The program focuses on developing various professional skills such as professional conduct, negotiation skills, work-life balance, and more.
