Program Overview

UA-WiSE (University of Alberta Women in Science and Engineering) and WISER (Women in Science Engineering and Research) are launching the third year of their mentorship program. The program is geared towards STEM fields and aims to connect undergraduate students, early career professionals, graduate students, and professionals who are well established in their careers. The program is open to both men and women.

Each group consists of a mentor who is well established in their field, a graduate student or early career professional mentee, and an undergraduate student mentee. Trio matching will be done by the Mentorship Organizing Committee based on the participants’ future goals and areas of expertise.

The program will run from October 2017 until March 2018 and will include three formal events:

  • October 5, 2017: Launch Event to introduce the trios and provide training for the program.
  • January 25, 2018: Professional Panel Discussion where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and dialogue with experienced professionals in academia, industry and government.
  • March 27, 2018: Professional development workshop (topic will be chosen according to participant feedback).

All events will be held in the evening and dinner will be provided. Childcare can be provided during formal events, but will only be made available following the request of a participant. After each event there will be a short online survey that will take no more than five minutes to complete.

Time Commitment

Each mentorship trio are expected to meet every two months for at least two hours (or monthly for one hour). A total minimum commitment of 12 hours over the duration of the program is required to receive certification for the program. Mentees will be required to pay a $30 deposit that will be refunded once the requirements are completed. Mentees will forfeit their deposit if they fail to complete the program requirements.

  • Formal events: Attending all 3 formal events will count towards 6 of the necessary 12 hours. If a formal event is missed, the time must be made up by the trio through additional independent meetings.
  • Independent meetings: Trios are required to meet (face to face or via Skype) for a minimum of 6 hours outside of the program’s formal events. Arrangements for these meetings are to be decided within the trio, and all meetings must be completed before the last formal event.

Program Benefits for Mentors
